Montessori Homeschooling, One Family’s Story

Montessori Homeschooling, One Family’s Story
There is a chapter in this book for each of the years. Here are a few excerpts from that would be called “third grade” of this 12-year experience of day-by-day, year-by-year, learning how to create an authentic Montessori education at home, through elementary, middle, and high school. Here is a second blog post with more information on this book.

THIRD GRADE – Introduction

0 music test

The First Test
Many of Michael’s friends attended public school and he often heard them worrying about an upcoming test, something outside of his educational experience until, in a class on music theory at the Saturday Music Academy, he was given a test. That evening as we were at dinner he said:

I don’t see what the big deal is about tests. My friends who go to school are always worrying about them. The music test today was no problem. If I didn’t know the answer to a question I just looked at the test of the person sitting next to me.

The Red Corolla, Montessori Cosmic Education (for Age 3-6)

The Red Corolla, Montessori Cosmic Education (for ages 3-6+)

front cover lg

The culture lessons taught in an AMI primary teacher-training course—physics, biology, history and geography, and the arts—are presented here in great detail to lay the foundation before age six for the older child’s search for his Cosmic Task. Also included are personal “filling in the gaps” assignments for the parent or n teacher, and two republished AMI and NAMTA articles, one on Cosmic Education and the second on music for all ages.

What I like about this book is the possibility that it will give to teachers who have not learned in their training this way of presenting the various cultural areas—art, music, geography, biology and physics—to young children.  Its value is in the excellent information about how adults can prepare themselves to inspire children in the first place. Although it is scattered throughout the book, there is information on approaching various ages of children, not just young ones.

LANGUAGE FROM 0-3

The First Year: the Senses
We can feed the child’s intense interest in language and prepare for later spoken language, by speaking clearly, by not raising our voice to the unnatural pitch often reserved for speaking to pets, and not oversimplifying language in the presence of the child. We can tell funny and interesting stories of our lives, recite favorite poems, talk about what we are doing, “Now I am washing your feet, rubbing each toe to get it really clean” and enjoy ourselves in this important communication. And we can listen: to music, to silence, and to each other.
