Montessori Support Beginning at Birth

Montessori Support Beginning at Birth

Some years ago I was sharing a video of children in infant communities in Japan and the USA, at a Montessori conference in the USA. A monitor was set up in a room where anyone could view it at any time.
Montessori primary teachers (of children age 2.5-6.5) were as shocked as I had been upon first witnessing children’s independence and concentration as early as one year. We had to bring chairs into the room so people could sit down and watch the whole 1-hour video!
I had already taught or counseled children and young adults from age 2-18 for many years before discovering the 0-3 Montessori program, so I knew what these teachers were feeling and I know they returned to their classrooms seeing the children in a new light.

BOOKS FOR 0-3
Since that time—even though I continue to speak, and consult for schools for children and young adults of all ages—whenever possible I share information about the first three years with parents, caregivers for this age, and adults working in Montessori infant communities.
Here are some books that share Montessori 0-3 information from different perspectives.

The Joyful Child, Montessori Global Wisdom from Birth to Three,
and
Beginnings, a Montessori Birth to Three Comparison with Traditions in Bhutan
Parents are overwhelmed by advice on the internet today. The Joyful Child book was created with Silvana Montanaro, medical doctor and teacher trainer for the Montessori 0-3 program. She wrote the introduction.
The 10th anniversary of The Joyful Child was updated with Judi Orion, director of pedagogy for AMI, who wrote a new introduction.
Beginnings gives perspective or new parents two views of early childhood, both based on many years of practice, not just theories or ideas. This gives parents many aspects of early childhood to think about, and  the opportunity to imagine which elements of each might feel right for their own family and tradition.

Montessori Cosmic Education, the Child’s Discovery of a Global Vision and a Cosmic Task
and
The Music Environment for All Ages
Montessori Cosmic Education, a small book published in 2023, was described by General Director of AMI Lynne Lawrence, at the Annual Global Meeting in Amsterdam, as The best first book for parents and others interested in the Montessori approach. It has already been translated into several languages, including a Ukrainian translation financed by a Russian parent.
An earlier version of The Music Environment was published as a chapter in the AMI Journal Theme Issue: The Montessori Foundations for the Creative Personality.
Today more and more neuroscientists and others are discovering the value of music, another area of language, in many aspects of life. This book is used a text Montessori 0-3 teacher training courses.
